Take your video recorder when you visit an elderly relative and have her go through her photo album as you video tape the pictures from over her shoulder as she talks about the pictures. Not only do you get her voice on tape and shots of the pictures but you also give her a chance to recall long lost memories that will be invaluable to your research.

Once I learned which county in Ireland my ancestor came from, I wrote a letter to the "letters-to-the-editor" column of that county's newspaper asking to hear from anyone with that particular surname. This is the way to reach the general public and not the limited population of genealogists.
